Asst. Prof. Dr. SMA Alim

Dr. SMA Alim is a distinguished Interventional Pain Specialist in Bangladesh. He serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Anaesthesia, Analgesia, and Intensive Care Medicine at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU). He completed his MBBS from Rangpur Medical College in 1998 and earned his MD in Anaesthesiology from Dhaka Medical College in 2008. He has obtained some notable international certificates, including EDPM (UK), GOPF (USA), and FIPM (India). Additionally, he has authored numerous national and international research publications. He is the Founder and Life Member of the Society of Intensivists Bangladesh (SIB), a Life Member of BSA-CCPP, and an active member of prestigious organizations such as IASP, ESRA, and BSSP. He also served with distinction as the Chief Medical Officer in the United Nations Mission in Darfur, Sudan.

He has received advanced training in Laser PLID, low back pain, acupuncture-based pain therapy (China), cancer pain, and osteoarthritis. He completed Interventional Pain Management, Musculoskeletal Ultrasound (MSK), and Advance Pain Management fellowships from Daradia Pain Clinic, India.

He began his government service career in 2004 at Central Police Hospital, Razarbag, Dhaka, where he served as Senior Consultant and Head of the Department of Anaesthesia, Pain, and ICU. He was the key coordinator of Bangladesh’s first complete transected hand reattachment surgery. He played a pioneering role in modernizing the hospital’s critical care and pain management services.

Before joining the Central Police Hospital, he worked as a Senior Lecturer of Pharmacology and Clinical Associate in the Department of Surgery at Zahurul Islam Medical College, Bhagalpur, Bajitpur, Kishoreganj. Furthermore, He served three years as an Associate Professor of Anaesthesiology at Ad-din Medical College, Dhaka, while on lien from Rajarbagh Police Hospital.

Despite his numerous academic and clinical responsibilities, Dr. SMA ALIM continues to provide vital services as the Chief Consultant at Proshanti Hospital Ltd. Moreover, in Bangladesh, he is recognized as one of the first ICU specialists who made significant efforts to make intensive care treatment more accessible and affordable for the general public. Notably, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he went above and beyond in serving patients, providing care to COVID-positive individuals, including door-to-door services, when necessary, without regard for his safety. His dedication and selflessness during this critical time remain truly commendable. He consistently strives to provide all his patients with the highest level of care.
